| Adjusting to your hearing instrument takes time and patience. Don't expect to learn everything the first day. Wear your hearing aid at home, listening to the sounds around you, even if there is no one to talk to. You'll be aware of sounds, like the tap dripping, the fridge clicking on or running, the little sounds you make as you move around. Each time you hear a sound, find out what it is. Then, when you hear it again, you'll recognize it, and it will bother you less and less. Wear your hearing aids on a regular daily basis. If you feel tired or nervous from wearing your hearing aids remove them for a few hours. You'll find the length of time you wear them grows, and the rest periods become fewer. In just a few weeks, you'll be able to wear them from morning until night without fatigue or nervousness. It is not unusual that we may need to make some adjustments on your new hearing aid. There are three area I want you to be aware of: Comfort - The hearing aid should be comfortable. You should not experience sore spots in your ear from wearing the hearing aid. Remove hearing aid and call for an appointment if you experience any pain or sore spots. Echo - Your voice should change, but it should not echo, or vibrate, or sound hollow, unless you have the hearing aid set too loud. If you cannot get rid of the echo until the sound is too quiet, you need to come in for an adjustment. Noise - Noise should be loud, but not uncomfortable. If you find you're reaching for the volume control because noises are too sharp, you need to come in for an adjustment. Feedback - It is normal to get a whistle when you put your hand flush against the ear. You should not get whisteling when you talk or chew, or anytime unless you are inserting the aid with the volume on. Once the hearing aid is seated in the ear the whistleing should stop.
